# How to remove a category from a testimonial, rename a category, or delete one

Take a category off one testimonial, "rename" a category, or delete a category everywhere, and what happens to your testimonials when you do.

Categories are shared across all your walls. Here's how to tidy them up.

## Remove a category from one testimonial

1. Open your wall. **My Testimonials** opens by default.
2. Click **Categorize** under the testimonial, or click one of its category labels.
3. Remove the category from the list.
4. Click **Apply Categories**.

## Rename a category

Categories can't be renamed directly. To change a name:

1. Tag the same testimonials with the new name. The quickest way is bulk tagging with **Add to existing categories**. See [How to tag many testimonials with a category at once](/managing-testimonials/tag-many-testimonials-at-once.md).
2. Delete the old category, as described below.

## Delete a category

1. Click **Categories** in the sidebar of your dashboard.
2. Under **Existing Categories**, click the trash icon next to the category.
3. Confirm with **Delete category**.

Your testimonials aren't deleted. The category label is removed from every testimonial on every wall, including archived ones, and its button disappears from your widgets and Wall of Fame pages. This can't be undone.

## Good to know

* Categories belong to your account, not to one wall. Each widget only shows buttons for the categories used on its own wall.
